What Is More Than Words all about?
Teen LEEP is a non-profit organization that operates a unique bookstore called More Than Words, developed and run by youth. Our space doubles as an art gallery, so in addition to books you can find youth created paintings, t-shirts, pottery, and more. The store hosts community events such as spoken word and open mic nights. Everything in the store is managed and made by young people but we are here for the general public of all ages.

In conjunction with the storefront Teen LEEP operates an online business out of the same location. Customers all over the world can buy books that the teens post online using a software system. The inventory of books at Teen LEEP is built on donations from the community.

Who are the youth that you hire and what’s your organization about?
Teen LEEP employs youth who need the opportunity the most. Many of our youth are in state custody. Others experience compound risk factors such as low income and lack of family support. Each youth has a different living situation. Some live in residential placements, others live with their family, while some of the youth live independently and receive support from an Outreach worker. Teen LEEP is about changing the trajectory that many of our youth face:
• Sixty-seven percent of youth leaving state custody have not passed the GED or obtained a diploma
• Sixty-one percent age out of custody without any job experience.
• Within one to four years of leaving state care, 10-35% of youth spend time in jail and 1 in 3 experience homelessness

As the youth at Teen LEEP we strive to change these statistics by learning technical skills, customer service skills and basic employment skills. We develop leadership and management skills to prepare for college or a career track. At the same time, we aim to shatter the many incorrect stereotypes and assumptions many people have about youth.

What would I be doing?
Depending on the track you choose you will be doing one or more of the following:
• Manage an inventory of books by alphabetizing and making sections in storefront attractive to customers
• Enter books into a software system to be sold online
• Locate books in the store that customers have ordered online
• Sort books into their appropriate genre
• Team up with a youth to complete the above tasks
• Coordinate a book drive for the store
• Provide a service based on a skill set you have. For example Web design or Marketing
